If you gather, at level 20 you get an ability that increases shards gathered per attempt to three. Miner gets the one specifically for lightning shards. You can cross class others from botanist. Certain Level 25 nodes have a higher chance for procs that increase either the shards per attempt or the number of attempts. Same is true for level 50 nodes.

So i ran into lvl 30 BTM Logging node with extra yield in Middle La Noscea - if i remember correctly the condition for it was 119> Fire Resist. Quite helpful then it comes to shard gathering least you can get some more with Wards.
